BBFC advice: Rude humour, very mild bad language
Remember the first Cats & Dogs in 2001?
Its star cast included Jeff Goldblum, Tobey Maguire, Susan Sarandon and, incredibly, Charlton Heston!
It was a runaway winner - its cost $60m but made a staggering $200m at the box office.
Surprisingly, it took nine years to conjure a sequel and there were even more celebrity voices - Nick Nolte, Bette Midler, Neil Patrick Harris and Christina Applegate were on board.
Move on another decade and out comes the third in the series and there is not a single name which I recognise.
This feels much lower budget and Cats & Dogs in name only. An unambitious, laugh free-zone.
It is set nine years on from the creation of a great truce between the species and a joint surveillance system, monitored by canines and felines to keep the peace.
Max Greenfield and Melissa Rauch give their voices to Roger the dog and Zoe the cat whose owners (Callum Seagram Airlie and Saah Giles) live in the same apartment block.
Of course, the latter don't know that their pets are both agents who are tasked with watching out for any untoward events between cats and dogs.
However, adventure is afoot when a villainous parrot (George Lopez) uses technology to set them against each other again.
Why? Because he wants people to buy not-so-popular pets like him, lizards, snakes and spiders.
Yes, and he drives an ice cream truck too.
None of it makes any sense but that wouldn't matter if it entertained the youngsters at whom it is aimed.
I doubt that it would because the jokes in Sean McNamara's film are too convoluted to prompt belly laughs.
In other words, it is yet another example of a lame sequel. Oh, for originality.
