I really wanted Stronger to be one of my films of the year - it adapts a true story and has a great cast - but I fear my expectations were so great it was bound not to live up to them.
Nobody could deny that Jake Gyllenhaal gives his best shot to playing Jeff Bauman who lost both his legs in the Boston marathon bombing.
I am still trying to work out how director David Gordon Green and his team make it appear that Gyllenhaal only has stumps after the tragedy.
And Miranda Richardson totally convinces as his hard-drinking, chain-smoking mother.
Green's problem is that he is largely going over old ground with Stronger - Patriots Day covered the bombing and the subsequent investigation while there have been myriad movies about amputees.
The difference here is the deep focus on how Bauman's working class community and family react to the tragedy.
Some are as uncomfortable with the media spotlight as they are in suddenly having to deal with trying to help Jeff re-acclimatise while some are like beacons under the pressure.
Among the latter is his girlfriend, Erin (Tatiana Maslany), who stands above the cacophony of his family.
Another unsung hero is his Costco boss (Danny McCarthy) who is actually more of a help than some of his nearest and dearest.
Importantly, Stronger shows that there is no heroism is having one's legs blown off.
Bauman did not want to be in the limelight and he certainly would have preferred not to have been
the symbol of Boston Strong, the city's campaign of defiance against terrorism.
Indeed, just like us all, he is a normal, flawed guy - enjoying drinking binges with his mates and constantly in trouble with his beleaguered girlfriend.
Not over-inflating Bauman is a strength of Green's film but it cannot compensate for the fact that it loses much of its drama because we knew almost every turn before it happened.

Reasons to watch: inspirational true story
Reasons to avoid: loses some of its drama because its details are so well-known

Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: yes
Overall rating: 7/10

Jake Gyllenhaal continues to be wrongfully overlooked this awards season. Not just for Stronger but also Okja!
