BBFC advice: Contains strong threat
Among the glut of sequels and remakes in 2017, Niels Arden Oplev's is probably the most pointless.
First of all, it is a rehash of a film which wasn't that great in the first place and, secondly, it offers nothing new.
I had falsely presumed that, having Kiefer Sutherland among the support cast, this Flatliners would move on the 1990 story.
So, why, if there is no reference to the original, was Sutherland hired?
Flatliners surrounds the obsession of a medical student (Ellen Page) to see if there is life after death.
Her fellow students (Kiersey Clemons and James Norton) are reluctant participants to her being 'killed' and then brought back to life under operating theatre conditions.
Meanwhile, their medic mates (Diego Luna and Nina Dobrev) find themselves dragged into the crazy experiment.
Much to their surprise, the senses of their pal seem sharpened when she re-emerges from death and they line up to have a go themselves.
However, she doesn't confess to the side-effects or her real motivation for trying to see what is on the other side.
The premise of students 'killing themselves' and being re-awaked with heightened senses is bonkers enough but where Flatliners really failed was in character exploration and dramatic effect.
To put it bluntly, the former are so shallow I didn't care what happened to them.
On top of that, it had literally all been done before.
That is why Flatliners is a leading contender for the most pointless movie of the year.
Reasons to watch: if you haven't seen the original there might be a modicum of interest
Reasons to avoid: a pointless remake
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 4.5/10

Movie review in 280 characters or less: Flatliners (remake) - if you have seen the original then don't bother because it's nothing new. If you haven't seen the original then go watch that 1st and then don't bother with the remake
