102. Monster Family; movie review

MONSTER FAMILY
Cert U
93 mins
BBFC advice: Contains mild violence, infrequent mild bad language

Searching for a place to take children in the bad weather? Well, watching Monster Family at the cinema could offer an unchallenging yet entertaining 90 minutes.
Despicable Me has set the bar for animated movies about dastardly villains who are not really that dastardly.
Holger Tappe's film comes up well short of that standard but still manages to amuse in parts and adds a couple of moral messages too.
Emily Watson provides the voice for is key character, mum-of-two Emma who leads a frantic life looking after her ungrateful family.
Meanwhile, a wrong phone number results in her talking to Dracula (Jason Isaacs) and him falling in love with her.
So, will she walk out on her knackered and flatulent husband (Nick Frost), stroppy teenage daughter (Jessica Brown Findlay) or nerdy son (Ethan Rouse)?
Her dilemma is heightened when a witch (Catherine Tate) who speaks like Star Wars' Yoda, turns her into a vampire who becomes reliant on Dracula for sustenance.
Monster Family doesn't prompt big laughs but I was smiling throughout at the exaggerated antics of the family.
But I wondered whether very young children might find the monsters a bit creepy - especially when Dracula threatens to end the world if he doesn't get its own day.
Originally, called Happy Family, Tappe's movie was made in conjunction with the Europa Park theme park in Germany where it has its own 12-minute show
Its big moral message that family love will win through in the end is one that I entirely endorse even at my ripe old age.

Reasons to watch: Light-hearted animated family romp
Reasons to avoid: The monsters might make younger children uneasy

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 6.5/10

Director quote - Holger Tappe: "The film was produced with Europe-Park and our Happy Family has entertained a million visitors there since 2016."

The big question: At which aged does Dracula stop being scary?
