189. Truth Or Dare; movie review

TRUTH OR DARE

BBFC advice: Contains strong threat violence

Thursday evening and I forced myself to go to Derby Odeon, following a meeting at YMCA Derbyshire where I volunteer.
This hammered home that part of my social life is spent on something very worthwhile while another of my hobbies, it could be argued, is utterly pointless.
This is how I felt after watching Jeff Wadlow's truly dismal Truth Or Dare.
Presumably, there is a less than discerning teenage market for this type of horror which I suspect some may even find funny. Its target audience is definitely not a 55-year-old bloke.
Truth Or Dare centres on a group of friends who spend their final spring break letting themselves go in Mexico.
On their last night they follow their pal (Lucy Hale) who is persuaded by a stranger  (Landon Liboiron) to go to a derelict building and play truth or dare.
Yep, just as you do.
Anyway, the truths become a little bit near the knuckle and the dares get a bit out of hand before everyone has enough and goes back to their normal lives.
Well, sort of normal - because it turns out that the game has followed them home.
That's right. In the order of the players in the ruined old house, they have to complete truth or dares and if they don't ,they die.
Inevitably, these deaths become more dramatic the longer this woeful pile of old nonsense goes on.
And it transpires that the resolution is even more crackers than the premise.
Tyley Posey and Violett Beane are among those who try to bring life into this lame duck but they fail hopelessly.
But here's the rub. Truth or Dare has made $50million from an $18million lay-out.
Why?

Reasons to watch: If you feel the need for bland teenage horror
Reasons to avoid: It makes no sense and isn't scary

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: Bum
Overall rating: 3/10

Director quote - Jeff Wadlow: "It was fun to make but it was also very difficult because we had a very small budget and it had to be made very quickly."

The big question - How do these type of films do so well at the box office?
