What were they thinking? Can it really be that Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy are starring in such a drudgery of a film.
Submergence is so dull that both Mrs W and I were struggling to stay awake and, by its conclusion, we were left asking each other what the point had been.
Wim Wenders' movie is a love story which fails to ignite - leaving us surprised at how little we were invested in the characters, considering the talent on view.
Vikander plays a top-of-her-field scientist who is fascinated with life in the darkness of the ocean floor.
Meanwhile, McAvoy portrays a spy who is being held by one of the militia groups in war-ravaged Somalia.
The films flits from their current plights back to the shoots of first love at a seaside hotel.
Their relationship emerges within a few short days and tenderness emerges as they get to know each other.
And then they go their separate ways, thinking about each other in their individual danger.
Sadly, that is it... the love story is ponderous, the ocean probe would need Einstein to understand it and the action in Somalia is the film's only saving grace.
Even that goes on a bit.
The names of Vikander and McAvoy should virtually guarantee success. Wenders did well to persuade them to star in his film but even they failed to make it work.
Studios will not be as easy to convince after such a flop. In America, the movie, which cost $15million hasn't yet made $400,000.
Reasons to watch: If you feel compelled to tick off all of the cataogue of either Vikander or McAvoy
