216. Deadpool 2; movie review

DEADPOOL 2
Cert 12A
119 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong bloody violence, sex references, very strong language

I have experienced spontaneous applause at a movie before and every time I have enthusiastically joined in.
This time, I rolled my eyes and exhaled in exasperation.
In my opinion, Deadpool 2 appeals to the lowest common denominator. No surprise that when I criticised it in a tweet that I should be trolled with a profanity.
Those who enjoy David Leitch's movie are presumably those who reach for varieties of the f or c-words as put-down lines and see both as forms of wit.
Deadpool 2 is Deadpool 1 without the originality and consequent shock factor.
Ok, there are a couple of scenes which push boundaries even further but overall the premise is the same - DP is a superhero with Tourette's.
Ryan Reynolds plays Deadpool and apparently ad-libbed through much of the production. If that is true, he demonstrates an ability for quickfire gags but has to resort too often to profanities.
His character's volley of 'jokes' also  seem out of place with the film's early scenes during which he appears to commit suicide and then flashes back to the murder of his wife (Morena Baccarin).
Anyway, Deadpool suddenly discovers a heart in trying to protect a teenage mutant (Julian Dennison), who can throw fire from his fingers, from the time traveller, Cable (Josh Brolin) ho is trying to kill him.
The plot is moderately interesting but is incidental to the spoofs and lampoons about other cinema superheroes.
Some even make short cameos but they are blotted out by the shouting and swearing and endless scenes of bloody violence.
At least the special effects are impressive but otherwise Deadpool 2 is a giant slice of unpalatable deja vu.
And yet the cinema audiences are lapping it up.
That's a shame - in my view, the box office success of Marvel and DC and the splurge of sequels has made film-makers lazy.
It makes quality movie-making rarer and prompts the big studios to battle it out to see who screams loudest.
At the moment Marvel is on the podium. I can't wait for it to be knocked off.

Reasons to watch: If you are a Marvel devotee
Reasons to avoid: It not-stop shouting and swearing

Laughs: Two (many for the younger people in the audience)
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: Yes
Overall rating: 4.5/10

Director quote - David Leitch: "I think there is a place where you wanna leave the audience and with a Deadpool movie, you can at least, in my opinion, is that you enjoyed the subversive comedy, but you didn’t alienate. You weren’t gonna alienate some people, you don’t want to alienate most of your audience."

The big question - When will cinema-goers tire of Marvel?
