SUPER TROOPERS 2
Cert 15
95 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong language, sex references, sexualised nudity, drugs references
Apparently, 54,000 people contributed to the crowdfunding of Super Troopers 2 - I would love to know if they think they have value for money.
I pity them if they think they do.
This movie is akin to the last knockings of the American Pie franchise - long after it lost its shine.
The common feature, aside of the low quality of gags, is Seann William Scott. This chap has clearly never heard of the phrase flogging a dead horse.
Scott only has a cameo during the first few minutes of Jay Chandrasekhar's film but his hallmark is stamped all over the remaining hour and a half.
The film's premise is that a disbanded Vermont Patrol squad should be reunited to oversee the return of a small border town from Canada to the United States.
The prospect of the handover is less than popular with the easygoing Canadians and they and their mounties set out to make the squad's task as tricky as possible.
And yet it is clear from the outset that this dysfunctional bunch would have messed it up on their own.
Chandrasekhar is joined by the rest of his Broken Lizard comedy team - Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske alongside Brian Cox as their captain and Lynda Carter (yes, Wonderwoman!) and Rob Lowe!
I suppose the bizarre casting offers a reason to watch but it doesn't make Super Troopers 2 funny.
Instead, it is one crass toilet-style juvenile gag after another chucked in with a heavy dollop of racial stereotyping.
Having just returned from North America, I can testify to a different sense of humour to us Brits.
But it would be a terrible insult to those on the other side of the Atlantic to think they would all be rolling around laughing at this.
There might have been a time and place for this type of smut and slapstick but the likes of American Pie worked because its characters had audience appeal.
That cannot be said for a single one of those in Super Troopers 2.
Reasons to watch: If you are a fan of American Pie-style humour
Reasons to avoid: Just isn't very funny
Laughs: A couple of chuckles
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: Yes
Overall rating: 3/10
Director quote - Jay Chandrasekhar: "54,000 people put in money so it was like a bolt of energy to the whole film. I mean, we literally could never have made it without that."
The big question - What do the legions of fans see in this?
