347. Mission Impossible - Fallout; movie review

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT
Cert 12A
147 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence, injury detail, infrequent strong language

Three years ago I wrote: "Sadly, time has moved on and, while Mission Impossible is still watchable, it has been overtaken by the likes of the Bourne Identity franchise and now Bond has surpassed it on every level.
"Unlike Bond, Mission Impossible has stuck by its leading man. But Tom Cruise is now well into his 50s and even his boyish good looks cannot gloss over nearly 20 years.
"In other words, on all fronts, Mission Impossible is looking its age.
"

I wonder, therefore, that it is because of its context within a schedule of dull action movie sequels that I am not as negative in my appraisal of Mission Impossible - Fallout.
And, somehow, I didn't notice Tom Cruise's age as much as I did previously.
Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt, the secret agent with a blotted record, who is assigned to track down missing plutonium from a terrorist cell with a mystery leader.
Inevitably, Hunt and his team (Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames) cause ructions among the authorities with their unconventional methods so the CIA chief (Angela Bassett) sends in an operative (Henry Cavill) to act as minder.
As usual, the plot is secondary to the action sequences which sees Cruise leaping like a salmon and running like a gazelle.
Unfortunately, he broke his ankle during one of the stunts and the subsequent eight-week break in filming cost the studio $80m!
I digress.
Christopher McQuarrie's film is high intensity action combined with a dose of over-acting and pretty implausible storylines.
I am still trying to fathom why Mrs W and I enjoyed it more than many films of its ilk.
I guess Cruise must have something to do with that. Sure, he is older than his character but it is rather comforting to see him cavorting across the screen.
And I even liked Simon Pegg as his tekkie sidekick.
Crikey, I must have been in a good mood.

Reasons to watch: Action, action and more action
Reasons to avoid: Its implausible storyline

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 8/10

Director quote - Christopher McQuarrie: "Tom (Cruise) asked me to come back. I said, no, I can't do that. There’s a different director every time. That's what the fans have come to expect. And he said, well, precedents are made to be broken. "

The big question - How long can Tom Cruise continue as Ethan Hunt?
