It seems incredible that the discrimination highlighted in 9 To 5 in 1980 is still relevant in the workplace today.
Ok, there are few characters as blatant as Dabney Coleman's "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" but the cases of Harvey Weinstein and Philip Green show that some men still treat women appallingly.
Colin Higgins' film is a comedy but there is no doubt it is also trying to make a strong point about women's rights.
Indeed, Jane Fonda, a long-time political activist, has emphasised as much in recent interviews.
Fonda plays a housewife, Judy, who is given her first job, following her divorce, as a secretary at Consolidated Companies (I still don't know what they do).
Anyway, she is taken under the wing of ambitious Violet (Lily Tomlin) who is clearly the firm's sharpest cookie and deserves the promotion she seeks but does not receive.
Hart is a bombastic boss who believes that the business will progress at optimal efficiency if the staff are given a hefty stick rather than a carrot.
He treats Violet like a tea girl and tries to prompt Doralee into giving him sexual favours.
Neither are happy and dream of putting Hart in his place. However, when the opportunity arises it doesn't exactly go to plan.
Fonda has said how much of a good time she, Tomlin and Parton had making 9 To 5 and you can tell. They are hamming it up in an endearing way.
But we shouldn't underestimate Coleman's contribution. He is a perfect fit for the unbearable, incompetent boss.
Higgins' film has become a classic because it was a picture which took the equal rights agenda into the mainstream but was also fun.
Its comedy hasn't really passed the test of time but its message still resonates loudly.
