29. Reign Of The Supermen; movie review
REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN
Cert 12A
85 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate fantasy violence, threat
So, Superman (Jerry O'Connell) is dead and now Metropolis is overflowing with copycats, dying to prove that they are equally adept at saving the world.
Honestly, if we believed a word of that, Reign Of The Supermen wouldn't be much of a film, would it?
This was the second of a one-night-only double bill which began with The Death Of Superman.
But anyone who thought he was a goner is greeted by a swirling doubt in this movie by Sam Liu.
It was wise to watch this immediately after The Death Of Superman otherwise I doubt I would have had a clue what was going on.
Indeed, the culmination of the film would make no sense without watching its predecessor.
However, by the second movie, the novelty of seeing DC's superheroes back in cartoon form had begun to wear off.
This time there is little reprieve from the intense fighting scenes with romance or even the Daily Planet very much in the background.
And without giving the game away, there is very little else to say that I haven't already proffered in The Death of Superman.
Devotees such be prepared for a couple of surprises (apart from the obvious one) but parents beware - it is more bloodthirsty than might be expected for a 12A- rated movie.
Reasons to watch: If you have seen the Death of Superman
Reasons to avoid: The novelty has worn off
Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 6/10
Did you know? The co-creator and original artist of Superman, Joe Shuster, modelled the original Metropolis skyline after Toronto, where he was born and lived until he was ten.
Final word - Jerry O'Connell (who voices Superman alongside his real-life wife Rebecca Romijn who plays Lois Lane): "I’m not sure I’d be able to keep the fact that I’m Superman from my wife. That’s divorce material right there.”
