125. Fall In Love At First Kiss (Yi wen ding qing); movie review
FALL IN LOVE AT FIRST KISS (YI WEN DING QING)
Cert PG
122 mins
BBFC advice: Contains mild bad language, sex references
t's only March and despite an encouraging start to the challenge of watching every film this year, I am already feeling like I am chasing my tail.
Therefore, when an opportunity arises to catch up on a movie I missed on its release, I am trying to grab it.
Fall In Love At First Kiss was came out to coincide with Chinese New Year and is a frothy teenage romance.
Indeed, its central character Yuan Xiang Qin, played by Lin Yun, reminded me of the type of ditzy characters which made Amanda Bynes famous.
In Chen Yu San's film, Yuan, a low-grade student who gives little concentration to her subjects, falls for the cleverest kid in school (Darren Wang) after they literally bump into each other.
From that moment on, she becomes obsessed in the disinterested but handsome superbrain.
Her chances increase when the home she hares with her dad literally collapses and they are taken in by a super-rich family.
And guess who happens to be part of the latter?
Yep, as unlikely as it seems, Yuan ends up living in the same house as the boy of her dreams.
Sadly, he remains unmoved. His parents' lofty ambitions for him and his own devotion to work mean that he sees her as little more than an irritant.
I would describe her differently. Frankly, the extent she goes to would usually result in an arrest for stalking.
Nevertheless, we all know that this is pursuit of 'true love', so she is allowed to follow her man wherever he goes and however embarrassing it may be to either or both of them.
Fall In Love At First Kiss will please its teenage girl target audience and give them plenty of laughs.
I struggle to imagine that many of my age will get its humour or the actions of its lead character, regardless of how they may have been charmed by her.
Reasons to watch: Beguilding performance by Jelly Lin
Reasons to avoid: Very cheesy
Laughs: A couple of chuckles
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 5/10
Did you know? Fall In Love At First Kiss is an adaptation of the manga series Itazura na Kiss written by Kaoru Tada.
The final word. Lin Yun: “Xiang Qin is really a unique girl, who goes the extra mile to win Zhi Shu’s heart. She doesn’t mind doing many crazy and silly things because she believes Zhi Shu is her true love.”
