127. A Trip To The Moon (Un viaje a la luna); movie review

A TRIP TO THE MOON (UNA VIAJE A LA LUNA)
Cert 12A
87 mins
BBFC advice: Contains infrequent strong language, drug references, sex references

Occasionally, I am torn by a movie because I can see its merit but am aggravated that it wanders off-piste.
Such is the case with Joaquín Cambre's A Trip To The Moon which centres on the travails of Tomas, an awkward teenager (Angelo Mutti Spinetta).
Tomas is something of an outcast who is supposedly revising for an exam but spends more time with his telescope and his obsession for the moon.
Meanwhile, his family puts him under pressure and his mother (Leticia Brédice) forces him to take antipsychotic drugs and visit a therapist.
He falls for his slightly older neighbour Iris (Ángela Torres) but fears his desire is unrequited.
As his life spins out of control he tries to bring it in line through the fantasy of leading a lunar expedition.
During the trip, a family secret is revealed and goes a long way to explain his curious behaviour.
If this seems straightforward, it isn't. A Trip To the Moon includes some stand-out performances, particularly from Spinetta, but it meanders so much it tests even those, like me, whom it had engaged.
And the surrealism of its fantasy section of ten minutes or so near its end completely defeated me.
Ok, there is a significant twist in the tale of Cambre's movie but it doesn't do enough to bring it around for me.
Movies which have a dedicated explanation page on the web tend to be too complex for their own good.
In my opinion, that is the case with A Trip To The Moon.

Reasons to watch: Different take on coming of age
Reasons to avoid: It is a bit laboured and becomes very surreal

Laughs: A couple of chuckles
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 5.5/10

Did you know? Twelve astronauts have walked on the moon's surface and six of those drove lunar roving vehicles on the moon.

The final word. Joaquín Cambre: "I think I always wanted to do a coming of age film because at that particular age was when I decided to be a film director so it’s like a plot point in my life. It’s really not autobiographical. I’m not a fan of the moon but I really think that 13 or 14 years are always ages that define you as a person.”
