BBFC advice: Contains infrequent strong language, moderate sex references
I have become a tad behind with some of the box offices successes of the year but this week I have set about putting right that wrong.
On the list was Fisherman's Friends which I keenly anticipated having seen its trailer two or three times.
Disappointingly, I have to report that there isn't much more to it than the three-minute snippet I had already watched.
Indeed, so many bases are covered during the teaser that the film was three-quarters complete before it offered any surprises.
It also niggled me that the tale of the Cornish sea shanty singers was so wildly embellished in Chris Foggin's screen adaptation.
Fisherman's Friends stars Daniel Mays as a music business executive who is on a stag weekend in Cornwall with three mates.
They have already peaked the annoyance of the locals when they alight upon a free gig by the Port Isaac singers on village's quay.
Mays' character is then told by his boss (Noel Clarke) to sign them up and goes about his task seriously, unaware the order is a wind-up.
The rest of the movie is dedicated to a materialistic London boy's immersion into the seaside where tradition is as strong as the bond between the people.
And yet I couldn't get out of my head that someone so tainted by the cynical music world should fall for a group of fisherman singing folk tunes.

Actually, he didn't. Mays's role is a representation of similar characters, not a specific one.
The same is true of other parts in the film - notably, the daughter (Tuppence Middleton) of the band's spokesman (James Purefoy).
The former melts the heart of the city boy while trying to make sure her own isn't broken.
Meanwhile, the villagers sing songs, drink real ale, go fishing, and save people in their lifeboat.
And there are the inevitable tragedy, romance and misunderstandings before everything is wrapped up so neatly that all it needs is a pink ribbon.

It's a pity because the true story of Fisherman's Friends has all of the above and didn't need the over-dramatisation or the romance between two fictional characters.

Did you know? Fisherman's Friends sang for The Queen at her Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, were selected to sing for Prince Charles & Camilla during their 2016 tour of Cornwall and were honoured with the Good Tradition Award at the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2011.
The final word. Daniel Mays: "They sent me the script and I was like “Fisherman’s Friends? Isn’t that a throat sweet?” When I delved into the script, I found out they were signed back in 2010 and got into the top 10 as a folk singing group, which is an extraordinary achievement." Yahoo Movies
