169. The World Is Yours (Le monde est à toi); movie review

THE WORLD IS YOURS (LE MONDE EST A TOI)
Cert 15
102 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong violence, very strong language, drugs references

The name Vincent Cassel on a cast list is akin to a hallmark of quality.
Therefore, my anticipation of The World Is Yours was higher than it would have usually been for a French crime caper.
Initially, I feared Romain Gavras's film would fail to meet expectation - because its comedy misses the mark in its early stages.
However, it rewards perseverance, becoming an offbeat thriller with several nourishing twists.
Karim Leklou stars as Farès - an appealing anti-hero who is born into crime but is desperate to move away from it.
Therefore, he does a deal for distribution rights for iced lollies but is met with scorn by his glamorous but ruthless mother (Isabelle Adjani).
Thus, the only way of financing the deal is to carry out a couple of "jobs" under the eye of a crazed wannabe crime lord (Sofian Khammes).
Inevitably, Farès's plans stumble of comedic cock-ups before the penny finally drops on how he can truly look after number one.
And then the film becomes a whole lot more serious and the violence is turned up a notch.
As it happens, Cassel is a bit player in The World Is Yours - merely, the back-up for the likeable Leklou.
The latter is the lead among some really engaging characters, sublimely written by Karim Boukercha, Noé Debré and Gavras.
Adjani is especially alluring as the devil-may-care, gorgeous mum. I was astonished to find she is over 60.
I also liked the introduction of a wide-boy Scottish drug dealer, played with potty-mouth zest by Sam Spruell.
They all make for a film which didn't strike all the right comedic notes but worked as an off-the-wall action modern-day crime movie.

Reasons to watch: Intriguing drawn crime thriller
Reasons to avoid: if you were expecting a comedy

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: Yes
Overall rating: 7.5/10

Did you know? A parliamentary report released last year noted that since the law criminalising drugs was passed on December 31, 1970 – the number of drug arrests in France has steadily increased, to nearly 140,000 in 2016 (or 67.5% of all arrests).

The final word. Romain Gavras: "He's always cool and sexy, Vincent (Cassel), so it was way more interesting to have him a sadder version of himself." Film List
