BBFC advice: Contains strong violence, bloody images, threat, horror
Yet another slapstick ghost story? Really?
Indian cinema is obsessed with malevolent spirits and their comedy value and I cannot deny that Kanchana 3 has been a big hit.
Unfortunately, its infantile humour sailed straight over my head. It was more than two and a half hours that I am never going to get back.
Raghava Lawrence's film combines comedy and horror with a very occasional song and dance routine chucked in. To some, it might be the perfect mix. For me, it was a perfect mess.
Well, at least for the first two hours. Then it slips into a completely different type of film about a Robin Hood type figure who resists the rich and powerful while devoting himself to caring for the poor.
However, while that section is relatively interesting it the degenerates into a woeful finale.
Lawrence is busy during Kanchana 3 - playing the two lead roles as well as directing. Perhaps that is why he has taken his eye off the ball.
His big cast, includes Vedhika, Oviya and Nikki Tamboli as the overtly sexual cousins of Lawrence's first character - a barmy bachelor with an insatiable need to get his own way.
Meanwhile, Alexandra Ri Djavi later enters the fray as the girlfriend of Lawrence's second part - the champion of the destitute
But they can't save a movie which demands the powers of concentration of a chess grandmaster and the sense of humour of a ten-year-old child.
As said, it is a right old mish-mash, combining bloody violence with juvenile comedy and was also one of everyfilm's great endurance tests.
I can only say as I see.. it didn't make me jump and it didn't make me laugh but audiences across India and beyond have clearly been lapping it up.
And I am betting that Lawrence will be talked into a follow-up, such has been its success at the box office.
Reasons to watch: Tamil audiences seem to have lapped up the humour
Reasons to avoid: Seemed banal to me
Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 3/10
Did you know? The belief in ghosts is deeply ingrained in the minds of the people of India across generations. The various concepts of ghosts trace their roots in the vast bodies of Hindu mythology, its religious texts, literature and folktales.
The final word. Vedhika: "I got an opportunity to do something really commercial and I didn't want to miss it. It's a film very close to my heart. I shot for 70 days but I never realised how time flew. We were having so much fun shooting that it felt like I was on a big holiday. News18.com
