216. Gloria Bell; movie review
GLORIA BELL
Cert 15
102 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong sex, language, drug misuse
From the ring tone (the same as Mrs W's wake phone alarm) to the dance style, Julianne Moore's Gloria Bell was splendidly familiar.
Thankfully, the key area of difference was that she is a long-term divorcee and we have just celebrated our 31st anniversary.
Moore is 60 on her next birthday but her character in Sebastián Lelio's film is attractive, vibrant and funny but also caught on the prickly hedge of life.
Gloria lives through music - whether it be singing along to the likes of Olivia Newton-John in her car or dancing to Anita Ward's Ring My Bell (geddit?) at singles' nights.
She is searching for love but not desperate for it - enjoying dancing, singing and her family keeps her fulfilled.
However, her head is turned by the dashing figure at the bar of a 62-year-old divorcee, played by John Turturro.
This should be the spark for fun but romance goes head-to-head with life's baggage and a winner is not easy to predict.
Lelio's movie is a remake of a South American movie called Gloria which I enjoyed a few years ago.
It is one of those rare films which lives up to the original, largely thanks to a wonderfully layered central performance.
Moore's Gloria prompts a giggle, is, passionate and self-doubting and, most importantly, utterly believable in the title role.
Unfortunately, despite her best efforts, real life has a habit of letting her down.
There are Glorias all over the world who know that feeling.
Reasons to watch: Excellent real-life observations
Reasons to avoid: Too much of life's mundanities
Laughs: Five
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: Yes
Overall rating: 8/10
Did you know? Julianne Moore's father was a US Army paratrooper and she was born on the Fort Bragg military base. Because of her father's military career, she'd moved 23 times and attended nine different schools by the time she was 18.
The final word. Sebastián Lelio: "The writing process of adapting Gloria into Gloria Bell was quite organic. The first approach was to do a very quick version in English, based on the original script, which allowed me to understand what worked and what had to be modified to adapt to the cultural context of Los Angeles."
