275. Hababam Sinifi Yeniden; movie review

HABABAM SINIFI YENIDEN
Cert 12A
107 mins
BBFC advice: Contains implied strong language, scene of sexual harassment

I have to confess that I was distracted away from watching Hababam Sinifi Yeniden because, very sadly, we had to go to the vet's to say goodbye to our ailing 19-year-old cat.
Thus, by the time I was in a position to resume, the iTunes linked had expired.
Please forgive that my review is based on the first hour and 15 minutes which were so dire that I was not inspired to pay any more money.
Of course, the word 'dire' is subjective. I know that this type of slapstick comedy goes down a bundle in Turkey but it left me as cold as a streaker in the Antarctic.
Doga Can Anafarta's film is set in a classroom in which time seems to have stood still and the pupils are in their 30s.
I presumed that the reason for this is that they have been forced to remain in school because of continual and en masse failing of exams.
These 'older' male pupils behave like they are 15 years old, especially when eight or so girls are added to the class.
The leering over the girls who wear short skirts and, in some cases, knee-high socks, is straight out of the Carry On textbook.
I confess to liking those films but it was a moment in time - namely 50 years ago. Surely, cinema has grown out of it by 2019.
Hababam Sinifi Yeniden stars Firat Albayram and Sami Aksu in the class of cretins who set about mischief as if it is a badge of honour.
Their teachers, except for the principal (Altan Erkekli) are almost as egotistical as their pupils.
Meanwhile, the girls simply act as foils with fluttering eyelashes.
The film scores 2.3/10 on Internet Movie Database. I would concur with that assessment

Reasons to watch: Seems to have been a hit with Turkish audiences
Reasons to avoid: Juvenile slapstick humour

Laughs: None for me
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 2/10

Did you know? As many as 44% of 25-34 year-olds in Turkey still had not attained upper secondary education in 2017, the second-highest rate across OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries after Mexico and approximately three times the OECD average of 15%.

The final wordDoga Can Anafarta: "There are new characters, a new generation using new language but with the spirit and brotherhood of the original Hababam taking in technological developments such as phones, computers and social media."
