339. Spiderman - Far From Home; movie review
SPIDER-MAN - FAR FROM HOME
Cert 12A
129 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate fantasy violence, threat, sex references, language
Oh, blimey, Marvel Studios may have finally found my weak spot.
I adored Avengers - End Game and, consequently, it is impossible to dislike its follow-up, Spider-man Far From Home.
Not that I knew what was coming beforehand. I had imagined that we would simply be reverting to a Spidey story and he would spin his web accordingly.
I was wrong. This follows on immediately after End Game so the shocks of its finale are still whirring in our recent memory.
They are also at the forefront of the mind of Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he tries to resume life as an American schoolboy.
Unfortunately, the legacy of Iron Man and others means that he can never just be a normal kid again, despite his desire to be.
So, Jon Watts' film becomes an entertaining push-me, pull-you between what is right for the world and right for him.
For example, he cannot see much beyond the crush he has for a classmate (Zendaya) and his catastrophic efforts to woo her.
Anyway, reluctantly he is dragged into a fight against a giant water monster alongside Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) under the instruction of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).
Meanwhile, the comedy is maintained by his geeky best friend (Jacob Batalon) and his girlfriend (Angourie Rice) and the equally unlikely pairing of his aunt (Marisa Tomei) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau).
Action and romance are against the background of a school trip which takes in Venice, Prague, Berlin and London - so there are plenty of famous sites to bring crashing to the ground.
It all adds up to an intoxicating mix which is a worthy follow-up but not direct sequel to the best Marvel movie ever.
Reasons to watch: An enjoyable add-on to Avengers - End Game
Reasons to avoid: If you haven't seen the last two Avengers movies
Laughs: A couple of chuckles
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 8/10
Did you know? Tom Holland attended the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, which is known for its notable alumni: Adele, Amy Winehouse, Jessie J and Leona Lewis, to name just a few.
Final word. Tom Holland: "I think this movie really is a fantastic kind of continuation of Endgame. And it is the perfect pick-me up (film), which is what the fans need.”
