147. The Hunt; movie review

THE HUNT
Cert 15
90 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong bloody violence, gory images, language

Wow, this is one of the most chilling movies I have seen in a long while - what a pity we didn't have the full experience in a cinema.
The last time I watched a Craig Zobel film, I wrote this:
"I doubt that in all the years I have watched movies, I have ever been so tense.
"But Craig Zobel's film was so frightening that I was on edge for its duration."
My description of Compliance in 2012 could have been matched to his 2020 film, The Hunt.
Unfortunately, it didn't complete its cinema run because of the Coronavirus pandemic but was moved swiftly to video-on-demand platforms.
Regardless, it is both shocking and intoxicating.
The premise is that a group of very rich hunters are flown out to a mystery destination to gun down 12 'deplorables' - people deemed to be unfit to maintain their place in society.
The dozen are kidnapped, drugged and flown to the hunting ground where they are initially gagged and tied up.
To make it a fair fight there is a possibility of arming themselves but with that has a significant risk of instant death.
The first minutes after the arrival on the hunting ground are some of the most surprising and frenzied I can recall for a while.
Think Saving Private Ryan on an open field with a lot fewer participants.
There are several instances which elicit gasps and twists which prompted "I never saw that coming" comments between Mrs W and me.
Emma Roberts and Betty Gilpin play two of those who are running for their lives from an avalanche of gunfire and grenades.
But it is less about the stars and more about the style and substance which makes The Hunt so shocking and enthralling.
However, the more I write, the more I am likely to give the game away and that would be a pity.
The Hunt is all about surprises - they spring up at every turn. Watch and enjoy!

Overall rating 8.5/10

Did you know? "Basket of deplorables" is a phrase from a 2016 presidential election campaign speech by Hillary Clinton at a fundraising event. She described half of the supporters of her opponent, Donald Trump, saying: “They're racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic.”

Final word. Betty Gilpin: "Yeah, I like to play unhinged women. What else are we here for? I am one of them, personally." Screen Rant
