292. The Big Ugly; movie review

THE BIG UGLY
Cert 15
106 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong bloody violence, language, sex, sexual threat, drug misuse

It would be fair to say that when I used to watch Vinnie Jones clodding around Wimbledon Football Club's midfield, I wouldn't have expected him to be a leading man in a Hollywood movie.
But here he is, with his new teammates A Clockwork Orange's Malcolm McDowell and Beauty And The Beast's Ron Perlman replacing Dennis Wise and Lawrie Sanchez.
Production on The Big Ugly was completed just before the tragic death of Jones's wife Tanya from cancer at the age of 53.
She would have approved of the old growler showing as much bottle on screen as he used to give on the pitch.
Jones plays a ruthless sidekick to a British gangster (McDowell) who is in the United States to complete a money-laundering deal with an old pal (Perlman).
It would appear to be a win-win until the American's psychopathic and sexual predator son (Brandon Sklenar) takes a shine to the British girlfriends who have been brought along for the ride.
Retribution is necessary and Jones's character, albeit long in the tooth, is ready to mete it out to the younger man.
Meanwhile, there is a parallel love story of the American mobster's weak foreman (Nicholas Braun) and the local bartender (Leven Rambin) who are both victims of the crazed villain's violence.
The Big Ugly is the first time I can recall Jones as a main character outside of two-footed challenges which earned him many a red card.
He takes up the weight pretty well, showing his fierce side to those who cross him but also tenderness towards his love interest (Lenora Crichlow).
The problem is that Scott Wiper's movie is so packed with cliches that Jones isn't really allowed to shine.
Instead, he is submerged beneath the sort of testosterone-heavy attitude on which he based his sporting career.
Nevertheless, I wouldn't bet against him being the new Danny Trejo. If that's your bag, he could be your man.

Reasons to watch: The big names are worth watching
Reasons to avoid: Many gangster cliches

Did you know? There really is a place called Big Ugly Creek which is a major tributary of the Guyandotte River in the Harts Creek District of Lincoln County, West Virginia.

The final word. Vinnie Jones: "My wife was in a lot of pain at the time, with cancer before she died. She died just after the movie was done, but she had a big influence on the movie. " Looper
