Why do Hollywood's rom coms focus almost exclusively on wealthy, erudite but jobless characters who struggle to hold down relationships and wallow in their own pity?
While drinking vats of alcohol.
Natalie Krinsky's The Broken Hearts Gallery stars Geraldine Viswanathan as Lucy, a New York gallery assistant who has more than a passing resemblance to Bridget Jones.
Her love life is such a mess that her bedroom is festooned with mementoes of former relationships, enabling or forcing her to dwell on the past, depending on the viewpoint.
Every new boyfriend is seen as the keeper and inevitably turns out not to be.
This certainly applies to Max (Utkarsh Ambudkar), a dashing gallery director who turns Lucy into a crumpled mess when he abandons her for an ex-girlfriend who shows up at a work event.
And so memorabilia of him are added to the heartbreak hoard which she has gathered in her bedroom.
Then she bumps into the emotionally stunted Nick (Dacre Montogomery) who is building a hotel and persuades him to have a gallery made up of bust-up mementoes in its lounge.
This utterly bizarre idea proves ludicrously popular.
Anyway, the pair begin to fall for each other but her ex hangs around like a bad smell and Nick is slow at fighting for his lass.
Thus, myriad misunderstandings follow as do tantrums and tears, Lucy becomes crazier and crazier and somehow, among it all, money seems absolutely no concern.
And then comes an ending which ties up all loose ends in a thrice.
Those who enjoy brainless rom coms might go for Broken Hearts Gallery but those who want comedies with laughs and finales which satisfy will not.
