IN SEARCH OF GREATNESS

BBFC advice: TBA

I write this while watching the US Masters golf playing in the background, marvelling at the skill of the world's best players.
Because this is a sport I play, it resonates more when I see the qualities of the likes of the world number one, Dustin Johnson, and greats of the game such as Tiger Woods.
But what sets the very best sportspeople apart from the rest, asks director Gabe Polsky and seeks to find answers from some household names.
His enthralling documentary In Search Of Greatness seeks to discover the lies between nurture and nature and how they have influenced the world's greatest - ice hockey star Wayne Gretzky, footballer Pelé, American footballer Jerry Rice, boxer Muhammad Ali, tennis players Venus & Serena Williams and basketball's Michael Jordan.
Through a series of intimate conversations and accompanying footage, Polsky tries to explain what are the forces behind the very very best.
The subject is tackled with great passion from the film's maker and honesty from its interviewees, especially Gretsky who is the film's major contributor.
It has a wow factor because we are so used to sports analysis being superficial - hanging on to the nuances of a one-off event - describing performance rather than understanding what is behind it.
And there is the bonus of footage of great players in their prime and during family time.

Did you know? Wayne Gretzky finished his career with 61 National Hockey League records, a number which has decreased to 60 in the years following his retirement in 1999.

The final word. Gabe Polsky: "These are kind of ideas and themes that I've been thinking about my whole life, since childhood. What is greatness and how can it be cultivated? Both as an athlete and even now as a filmmaker, trying to achieve excellence but at the same time seeing all these systems that can stifle creativity." Si Extra Mustard
