When we think of iconic celebrity photographs, they tend to be from the 20th century, don't they?
They may have been of films stars such as Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor or music icons such as The Beatles or Elvis.
Those were the days when the worldwide medium was print and great photography was key to selling newspapers and magazines.
And snappers of the rich and famous such as David Bailey as Patrick Lichfield were as famous as their subjects.
Douglas Kirkland was less comfortable in front of the lens but, as Luca Severi's documentary proves, he was a supreme artist behind it.
Kirkland has been at the cutting edge of fashion, photojournalism, portraiture and movie promotion for more than 60 years.
And he has remained a faithful family man who has turned down more than one seduction from the world's most beautiful women.
Kirkland's camera has provided a record of pop culture since the 1950s when he had his big break with an intimate shoot of Monroe.
It was such a success that stars and their agents demanded that he photograph them.
That Click is littered with testimonials from famous people who testify to the charm and brilliance of Kirkland.
He is modest in response, thankful for a life which he continues to live well despite his increasing frailty.
Severi's film covers all aspects of his life, from an upbringing which gave him opportunities to the vital role his wife has played in his career.
There are enthusiastic contributions from movie glitterati such as Sharon Stone, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Williams, Baz Luhrmann, Andy Garcia.
It also reminds us of a time when magazines sold by the millions because of the type of photojournalism at which Kirkland excelled.
Unfortunately, its timeline is rather jumbled but. in this instance. that is probably apt because it reflects Kirkland's style which is never in straight lines.
No matter - he conveys the joy he has in taking pictures and the celebs say how much they love being his subjects.
Reasons to watch: Insight into an amazing life
Reasons to avoid: Its chronology is very jumbled
Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: Very brief
Overall rating: 7.5/10
Did you know? Douglas Kirkland's son, Mark, has directed more than 80 episodes of The Simpsons.
The final word. Luca Severi: "Douglas is so loved by everyone, especially those who’ve been photographed by him. Remember, we’re talking about people who are photographed all the time. Yet with him and his work, there’s special chemistry. Again, the guests were very open and wanted to be involved, but organising it was the hard part. " The Hollywood News
