365. Blumhouse's The Craft: Legacy; movie review
BLUMHOUSE'S THE CRAFT - LEGACY
Cert 15
94 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong sex references
I remember teenage girls being a bit difficult to understand when I was a youngster but I didn't really believe some were actual witches.
I'm only joking - I know that The Craft - Legacy is not real life but I suspect it has been a hit with its market - the 14 to 19-year-olds.
Especially those who are not the so-called popular girls.
Yes, this is all about a geeky gang-of-four, played by Cailee Spaeny, Gideon Adlon, Lovie Simone and Zoey Luna getting their moment in the spotlight.
Spaeny's Lily is a new girl in town, prompted to move house because her mum (Michelle Monaghan) has fallen for a dashing single father (David Duchovny).
Inevitably, integration is tough and Lily is bullied at school by the outspoken Timmy (Nicholas Galitzine) and is pretty much ignored by her new half-brothers.
However, the good news is that there is a trio of teenage witches who see her as the vital 'fourth' who can help them increase their powers.
The Craft reminded me of Twilight. Ok, there are no vampires but special powers abound almost as much as dark secrets.
At is heart are the friendships and insecurities which are typical of teenagers worldwide with love, bullying and betrayal to the fore.
And, of course, there is a big dollop of magic and a slice of good versus evil.
It is certainly not aimed at a 57-year-old bloke whose children are probably too old to enjoy it.
However, I could see that it would resonate with its target audience despite it not reaching the dramatic highs which I would have expected.
Oh, and even the geeks are pretty, aren't they?

Did you know? A Trinity College study found that 8,000 Americans identified as Wiccan in 1990, which increased to 342,000 in 2008. Additionally, 140,000 identified as pagan in 2001, increasing to 340,000 in 2008.
The final word. Zoe Lister-Jones The divine feminine is something that has been so suppressed for so long. And I think the suppression of witchcraft and witch-hunting and the history that those traditions have had are so much about the institution of patriarchy being terrified of women’s power.” Vanity Fair
