BBFC advice: Contains strong language, threat, horror

Almost every feature film which comes out of Ireland seems to have a gritty realism and even horror and
You Are Not My Mother is no exception.
Kate Dolan has turned to a familiar background - a sink estate - to create a very unusual movie.
It grabs from its opening scenes when a seemingly abandoned baby is taken to a fire in what appears to be a ritual.
The plot then moves on more than 15 years and it becomes clear that schoolgirl Char (Hazel Doupe) was the small child and now lives at home with an ailing grandmother (Ingrid Craigie) and a mentally ill mother (Carolyn Bracken).
There is something very much amiss in their dank council house. Energy is sapped among the adults and Char has to make her own way.
Despite her family background, she is doing well academically at school but the bullies (Jordanne Jones and Katie White) give her a hard time.
Nevertheless, their aggression bounces off her until her mother goes missing and then vulnerabilities emerge alongside her desperation to find her.
Dolan's film is a slow burn and relies on the pressure-cooker building on Char as she faces revelations of her past and a ghastly present.
It is an unconventional horror set in a regular house in a working class street rather than standing alone and appearing creepy from the outside.
But there are the usual cliches of darkness, strange noises and locked doors.
Nevertheless, Doupe brings the audience onside and there is enough in the movie to excite.

The final word. Kate Dolan: "As an Irish person, I’ve always been intrigued by our folklore, it’s always a part of growing up as a kid, you would hear all the stories. They were told to you as if they were real. I was always intrigued by these stories and as a filmmaker, what you could do to bring them to life. Particularly, the Changeling myth." Hammer To Nail
