"Haven't we watched this before?", asked Mrs W.
I also sensed deja vu and that's because it's only a year since we took in the documentary, He Dreams Of Giants.
That film tied up the loose ends of Terry Gilliam's obsession with Don Quixote and the completion of a quest to make a movie about him.
It effectively brings Lost In La Mancha up to date.
Therefore, it seems strange to go back 20 years to the filming of the original fly-on-the-wall documentary by Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe.
This was meant to be a chronicle of Gilliam fulfilling his long-held ambition but ending up being a record of one of cinema's notorious failures.
The original Quixote movie was filmed with Jean Rochefort in the lead, supported by Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis
From the outset, however, Rochefort's health was a cause of deep concern as was the picture's budget.
These worries soon became part of a catalogue of catastrophe.
Thus, a whole new picture emerges, focusing on the processes of movie-making and what can go wrong because, on this Don Quixote, everything that could go belly up, certainly did.
Anyone who is interested in what happens behind the scenes will certainly enjoy Lost In La Mancha.
the only element which it misses is the context of what happened nearly 20 years later.
It is engaging, fun and rather surprising.

Reasons to watch: An inside take on trying make a film against the odds
Reasons to avoid: Doesn't have the context of what happened next

Laughs: None

Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 7/10

Did you know? Terry Gilliam's debut feature was Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974), an absurd take on Arthurian legend. He co-directed with fellow Python Terry Jones.

The final word. Terry Gilliam: "I'll never forget (the directors of Lost in La Mancha) were moaning because the movie is falling apart and they had come to make a film about the making of Quixote. And I was like, "Just shut up and keep shooting, you are getting something better!" Business Insider
