162. Main Viyah Nahi Karona Tere Naal; movie review
MAIN VIYAH NAHI KARONA TERE NAAL
Cert PG
117 mins
BBFC advice: Contains infrequent mild bad language, comic violence
Is there a more beautiful actress in all of Indian cinema than Sonam Bajwa?
Indeed, she is so attractive that is is rather distracting.
Her latest movie, Main Viyah Nahi Karona Tere Naal has quite a bit of eye candy. Even the support cast pretty things up during a film in which stags Gurnam Bhullar and Jasprem Dhillon butt heads over who gets the girl.
Rupinder Inderjit's film is light and frothy and might elicit some laughs from Punjabis who will know much more about local marriage and wedding culture than me.
I find it staggering just how many Indian rom-coms go down similar avenues but there seems to be an unquenched thirst for them.
So, here we have Bhullar playing a happy-go-lucky Canadian whose mother wants him to wed a traditional Punjabi girl back home in India.
He reluctantly flies out to his mum's childhood village and sets about proving he is not a suitable match so he can go home as fast as possible.
This is easy meat until he is faced with the headstrong Mannat (Bajwa) who makes it clear that she wouldn't marry him even if he wanted to.
Inevitably, she sparks his interest - however, she has her own problems because she already has a bad-boy lover (Dhillon).
Inderjit's film is frothy fun with misunderstandings aplenty as romance flickers between the two leads.
Vibrant colours are the order of the day, Bhullar throws in a song and Bajwa proves she is a natty dancer.
Meanwhile, Jatinder Kaur steals the limelight as the Canadian's wise and funny blind grandmother who sings like an angel.
Many of the lines have been seen before (panics over weddings, inappropriate 'foreign' participants against locals, Punjabi pride, Jatts etc) but there is a rather pleasing chemistry between Bajwa and Bhullar which lifts Main Viyah Nahi Karona Tere Naal as well as its earworm songs.
Those in need of a feel good movie which isn't much of a challenge may well look in its direction.

Did you know? After completing her studies at Delhi University, Sonam Bajwa became an air hostess before appearing in a national beauty contest and then becoming an actress.
The final word. Gurnam Bhullar: "@sonambajwa thanku for trusting me, finally again. Mr director #RupinderInderjit 2nd film together, #ProducedBy my home production @diamondstarworldwide."
