213. Till We Meet Again (Yue Lao); movie review

TILL WE MEET AGAIN (YUE LAO)
Cert 12A
128 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong violence, injury detail

Maybe I am becoming cold hearted in my old age but fantasy romances consistently fail to light my candle.
I could see why younger folk would be enraptured by Giddens Ko's Till We Meet Again - especially those who have been brought up to believe in reincarnation.
This is central to a movie about a young man (Kai Ko) who finds himself at the Eastern version of the Pearly Gates after being struck by lightning.
Along with others who have died, he has to go through tests to see if he can return as a human being rather than a bug or the like.
He teams up with an emotional young woman (Gingle Wang) who, after a few petulant encounters, begins to fall for him.
However, when they return to the world, he immediately bumps into the girl (Vivian Sung) he was due to marry.
The story revolves around him trying to be dispassionate and make sure she is set up for a future without him.
However, love can apparently cross parallel worlds.
Meanwhile, another man (Umin Boya) from the other side returns to the human world to visit revenge upon the brother who killed him 500 years ago.
He begins a bloody trail which leads him to clash with the aforementioned romantic.
I have to be honest and admit that I could not always follow Till We Meet Again - it is very fast-paced and has tangents which I found a tad baffling.
This is not unusual in fantasy films from the Far East which often have scenes which go over my head.
Nevertheless, it had a heart which I admired.

Did you know? The major religions that hold a belief in reincarnation are Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism, all of which arose in India.

The final word. Giddens Ko: "Gingle is obviously a genius actress. If I had worked with her on my first movie, I would have mistaken myself for a genius director because she can so successfully portray whatever emotions I want her to capture. That's how I felt with Kai working on my first movie. I thought, 'Man, I'm awesome.' ." Straits Times
