BBFC advice: Contains strong violence, bloody images
Another week and another jingoistic movie about an Indian hero seeing off Islamist terrorists.
Beast is a comedy-drama with a storyline which is neither funny nor credible.
But at least gives Vijay the chance to prove he can still kick as high as his head at nearly 50.
He stars as a former soldier who is discharged after a special operation goes wrong and a child is killed.
A few years later, he is persuaded to join the security team at a posh shopping mall.
Inevitably, this coincides with a terrorist attack and dozens of innocent people being taken hostage.
Pooja Hegde gives very tepid support while Vijay is beating up bad guys as does VTV Ganesh who plays his security company boss and Yogi Babu as one of the shoppers.
Inevitably, the demands of the terrorists is for the release of one of their comrades so he can wreak more havoc.
His bidding is done by a monosyllabic, masked criminal (Ankur Vikal) who is in charge of dozens of mall raiders.
The storyline is crass but gets even worse when Vijay takes on all the intruders single-handedly.
Yes, he even manages to dodge bullets from machine guns as he takes his machete blade to the terrorists.
All the while, he carries an arrogant smirk which gives the impression his character is enjoying being in the spotlight.
Those who enjoy Vijay in full flight might get something from Nelson's film but I struggle to imagine anyone but his most ardent fans enjoying this.
