I have rarely felt as out of my depth in a cinema as I did at screen nine, Nottingham Cineworld.

Admittedly, a movie titled That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime - Scarlet Bond should have suggested that I would be treading outside of my comfort zone.

And, sure enough, it took me a good hour before my eyes and brain acclimatised to the speed of Yasuhito Kikuchi's movie.

But the real reason for my befuddlement is that I had not seen any of the anime or read the manga on which the film is based.

Anyway, I watched the dubbed version (it is available subbed) and, from what I could make of it, the last of the Ogre people is the focus of the film.

Named Hiiro and voiced by Jonah Scott, he is rescued after a battle with the Orcs and devotes his life to his saviour, the young queen (Cherami Leigh) of the small nation of Raja.

However, her health is declining because of a curse and other states are preparing an invasion.

There are vibrant, colourful and intense battle scenes, acts of love and betrayal and the rather strange transformations from humanoids into balls of slime.

The latter is seen as quite normal and so I am presuming is an essential part of the back story as must be the strange appearance of some of the characters, including one with ginormous breasts.

To be fair, I did find myself up to speed with the plot by its second half and was invested in the future of Hiiro and the queen.

Therefore, I was disappointed when a jaw-dropping finale became unnecessarily diluted.

The final word. Series author, Fuse: "I started writing this piece of work as a hobby, but it's going to be made into a movie! I was so dumbfounded at first because it felt almost unrealistic."
