Before it is automatically assumed that I would not enjoy a vampire spoof, I ought to point out that I laughed four times during What We Do In The Shadows.

However, I have to report that my lips did not crack as I watched Let The Wrong One In.

I suspect this is simply because I am too old and that younger folk may find it hilarious.

But I did admire the script - there are a few neat plays on words and a host of lovely little mickey takes on the bloodsucking genre.

Conor McMahon's movie stars Anthony Head as a trainspotter who turns vampire hunter after his fiancee (Mary Murray) comes back transformed into a bloodsucker after a hen-do in Transylvania.

One of his targets is Deco (Eoin Duffy) who has been bitten at a nightclub and is now metamorphosing at the home of his mum (Hilda Fay) and brother (Karl Rice).

Rice becomes the film's lead as his character simultaneously tries to fend off his brother and protect him.

Meanwhile, there is an avalanche of corny vampire jokes and vats and vats of fake blood.

The actors are obviously enjoying their roles - especially Head who takes on his with great gusto.

But this is a pantomime which didn't tickle my funny bone - instead, I just ended up rolling my eyes.

However, as said, I think younger folk may appreciate it much more.

The final word. Conor McMahon: "Most of the horror films I’ve made have been in the countryside, as it provides an isolated setting, but I’ve always wanted to set one closer to home. Setting it in Dublin also meant I could lean into the local dialogue and humour that I’ve grown up with." IFTN
