58, Dreambuilders; movie review

DREAMBUILDERS

BBFC advice: Contains mild threat

Regularly, I have the same dream of being a former student, hanging around my old university haunts because I haven't got a job.
It occurs so often, it is as if I am continually returning to the same film set.
Therefore, it was eerie that the latter premise should be key to Kim Hagen Jensen's animated picture, Dreambuilders.
The extra layer here surrounds the difficulties of two divorced parents moving in together with teenage girls.
The movie is set at the home of Minna (Robyn Demsey) and her father (Luke Griffin) - a happy space despite her mother walking out when she was very young.
However, Minna's life is turned upside down when John's girlfriend (Karen Ardiff) moves in with her daughter Jenny (Emmy Jenkins).
Minna is the polar opposite of Jenny - an extreme follower of fashion who spends much of her time trying to impress her social media followers.
But, while they are at loggerheads in their waking hours, things become especially hairy in their dreams after Minna unintentionally discovers how they are created.
Yep, there are quirky robot-looking people who write the scripts and build the sets.
Anyway, it is an offbeat, fast-paced journey with a positive message about new families trying to get along.
There is certainly enough to please children who need occupying on a cold winter half-term day but might be a bit too tense for the younger ones.

Reasons to watch: Offbeat family animation
Reasons to avoid: A bit heavy for very young ones

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 6/10

Did you know? We all have dreams every night because our brains continue to be active but it is common not to remember much about them.

The final word. Kim Hagen Jensen: "I have a passion for telling visual stories and creating worlds through animation, comic books, and illustration. Dreambuilders my first animated feature film has been sold to 24 countries." Kimhagen.org
