63. Run Baby Run; movie review

RUN BABY RUN

I don't think I have ever heard more melodramatic music as background to a thriller.
And, by and large, the action on screen lived up to the accompaniment. However, Run Baby Run loses a mark for its very rushed and unsatisfying finale.
It was such a shame because Jiyen Krishnakumar's movie has the most powerful first half we have seen in quite a while.
In its opening scene, a young woman falls to her death from a tower block and then the focus is cast upon an ordinary banker, played by RJ Balaji.
He picks up some earrings for his fiancee (Isha Talwar) from a jeweller and only when he is driving along does he see a young woman (Aishwarya Rajesh) crouched in the back of his car.
Under fear of death, she pleads for his help, asking for five minutes in his apartment to charge her phone.
His response sparks a series of incidents which will change his life forever.
The most impressive element of Run Baby Run's first half is its flow. Every scene is important and is very often followed by a surprising twist.
By the interval we were breathless - it was as if we had witnessed our favourite football team being 3-0 up in a game in which we had no expectations.
It was inevitable, therefore, that it would struggle to maintain its standard.
Krishnakumar does keep the audience on its toes up until the last 20 minutes but he couldn't seal the deal with a glorious finale.
Indeed, it is rushed and loses the believability which had been so important in its first half.
Nevertheless, Balaji cuts an excellent low-key hero and I am keen to see more straight roles from him and more work from Run Baby Run's director.
Maybe they could even collaborate again?

Did you know?  RJ Balaji is most well-known for being a presenter on 92.7 BIG FM and for his contribution towards humanitarian causes for which he received the CNN News Indian of the Year Award in 2015.

The final word. RJ Balaji: "I know the responsibility of delivering a good film to the audience and Run Baby Run will be a different film as a hero to my filmography. I am the baby, who is on the run." DT Next
