62. Kutsal Damacana 4; movie review

KUTSAL DAMACANA 4

BBFC advice: Contains strong language, injury detail

If I finally manage to watch every UK cinema release in one year, I will have to suffer misfiring comedies and drives home through the night.
But I confess that when we arrived chez White at 1.30am after seeing Kutsal Damacana 4, I was wondering: "Is this worth it?"
We took in Kamil Cetin's movie as part of three-film Monday while we were in London after playing golf over the weekend.
It was the polar opposite in every aspect of The Whale which we had seen before it.
This is the latest in a series which began in 2007 and had been on hiatus since 2011 when the third movie left out the previous leads, Safak Sezer and Ersin Korkut.
Sezer returns as Fikret, a charlatan exorcist who somehow has been recognised by the Pope and taken to live and work at the Vatican.
When the Pope dies, he is fired and returns to Istanbul where he and his pal (Korkut) look to exploit rich families by claiming they can remove evil spirits.
The problem is when they are commissioned by a particularly wealthy family, the demon is real and causes havoc with them and anyone who comes near.
The quality of the comedy has echoes of our Carry On films but is a lot coarser. So, rather than being naive and daft, the sex gags feel creepy.
And then there are the more blatant visual jokes including truly ghastly projectile vomiting.
But, to be fair, the native speakers in the audience were having a right good giggle - and Kustal Damacana 4 has done well at the box office in Turkey and abroad.
The slapstick and the shouting just wasn't our bag.

Reasons to watch: Plenty of laughs for those who get the humour
Reasons to avoid: For us, was like watching a film from 40 years ago.

Laughs: One with plenty more among the native speakers
Jumps: None
Vomit: Lots
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 3.5/10

Did you know? In 2013, Sezer rose publicly knelt in front of Turkey's Prime Minister and apologized for his earlier participation in protest demonstrations.

The final word. Şafak Sezer: " I want the movie to have a large audience. The audience does not accept me when I do a different job, so we will always do what they love." (Translated from My Net)
