106. Kuttey; movie review

KUTTEY

BBFC advice: Contains strong language, bloody violence, sexual violence

I am starting to believe that the more western the style of film, the more likely it is to fail at the Indian box office.
Kuttey was a major flop during its cinema run but Mrs W and I were gripped by this Rashomon-style thriller.
There's a touch of In Bruges about Aasmaan Bhardwaj's movie that comes at a big-money heist from myriad angles.
Divided into four chapters, Kuttey begins with a prologue in which a communist rebel (Kokona Sen Sharma) is sprung from a police station after being tortured and abused by corrupt officers.
She allows the only one who protested against her treatment to survive and makes the strange gift to him of a hand grenade.
The action moves on 13 years and the cop (Kumud Mishra) is caught up with another corrupt boss (Arjun Kapoor).
They are hired to kill the rival of a crime lord (Naseeruddin Shah) but are distracted by the chance to steal life-changing amounts of cash from a security van.
As they lurch from one disaster to the next, they make a surprising deal with another no-nonsense police officer (Tabu).
The impetus switches between vying gangs and the violence ratchets up as the ilicit cash slips from their respective grasps.
I have to admit that Kuttey had me a tad perplexed in its early stages because of its breakneck speed but once my old eyes had attuned, there came rewards through the movie's moral messages as well as its breathless action.
Unfortunately, none of the characters are appealing enough to deserve us to be rooting for them but the quality of the plot and the sharpness of its turns meant we were glued nevertheless.
