BBFC advice: Contains child sex abuse references, domestic abuse

As cinema-goers, do we ever really think about what it must be like to be the central figure of a documentary?
Jennifer Tiexiera and Camilla Hall's Subject examines the fall-out which is almost always dramatic and occasionally life-changing.
And it asks some pertinent questions around the morals of putting individuals up for public judgment without giving them the benefit of either care or money.
Yes, this is a documentary about documentaries and includes clips of dozens of famous ones over the past 100 years.
It concentrates mainly on the participants of acclaimed movies The Staircase, Hoop Dreams, The Wolfpack, Capturing the Friedmans, and The Square.
They speak about the experience of why they were involved, what it was like to be under the microscope and the immediate and long-term effect on them.
Their revelations are surprising and, in some cases, shocking.
There are also contributions from documentary-makers such as Kirsten Johnson, Sam Pollard, Thom Powers and Sonya Childress who speak about the ethics and responsibilities of creating factual films.
Subject is interesting but not riveting because it goes over the same ground repeatedly to make its points.
And, ultimately, it leaves open the question that if the contributors were so badly affected by being in a documentary, why would they want to be in another one?
