MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON
Cert PG
90 mins
BBFC advice: Contains mild upsetting scenes, rude humour, infrequent drug references
Rarely have I seen a movie which oozes more charm than Marcel The Shell With Shoes On.
It prompted us to laugh out loud three times and left us with a lovely warm feeling and yet it is nothing more than a stop-motion animation... about a shell.
Marcel is the creation of Dean Fleischer-Camp who is the film's director and his former partner Jenny Slate, the voice of the title character.
It is a spin-off from a series of viral YouTube shorts in 2010. Indeed, the premise of the movie is a reprise of that phenomenon.
It stars Fleischer-Camp as himself, an artist who is staying at an Air BnB while trying to find a permanent home after splitting from his girlfriend.
Already resident is Marcel and his ailing grandmother (Isabella Rossellini) and Fleischer-Camp's interviews with them capture the public imagination.
This is because Marcel is so damned cute - he has a lovely optimism and has devised myriad ingenious ways to get around the house.
But there is also sadness at a previous event which saw him and his grandmother split from the rest of their extended family.
Thus, much of the focus of the film surrounds his search for them.
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On examines the ties that bind, ingenuity in the face of adversity and celebrity culture.
And it wraps them all up in a most unexpectedly lovely package.
If you are in need of cheering up, go watch it. If you have a heart, you won't be disappointed.

The final word. Dean Fleischer-Camp: "I always feel like Marcel, everyone talks about how cute and small he is and that’s what everyone writes about him. (But) I always feel like that’s not even what’s interesting about him. I feel like I have a friend who’s like a 4 foot 11 inches but also brilliant and went to MIT and no one asks him about mechanical engineering. Everyone is just like “Oh, my gosh, you’re so short.” Gizmodo
