161. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar; movie review

BBFC advice: Contains infrequent strong language

Beautiful people wearing the trendiest clothes in stunning locations, dancing to wonderfully ambitious choreography to hit music.
The recipe of Luv Ranjan's Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar will thrill many Bollywood fans but its spoilt characters rather grated on me and it is way too long.
Nobody can deny that Shraddha Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor have screen presence - after all, they are two of the most famous faces in Indian cinema.
But even they couldn't help substance win the battle over style because of the film's rather strange premise.
Ranbir plays the son of rich parents and runs the family's car business but also is secretly the driving force behind a most unusual agency.
He and his best friend (Anubhav Singh Bassi) specialise in helping with complex break-ups, ensuring their clients are not blamed even though they make clandestine arrangements for it to happen.
His devil-may-care approach to life changes, however, when he becomes besotted with the best pal (Shraddha) of his business partner's fiancee ( Monica Chaudhary).
Suddenly, his cynicism towards love is parked and he, with the backing of his very close family, goes headlong towards marriage.
"Will they, won't they?" would be the plank for some good fun if the movie didn't go on for so long. It just doesn't have enough meat to last more than two and a half hours.
But, in its defence, its finale scenes are among its best and would hit the mark even more if they had been at least half an hour earlier.

Did you know?  Salman Khan offered Shraddha Kapoor a part in his movie ‘Lucky: No Time For Love’ when she was 16 after he saw her perform in one of her school plays. However, she rejected the offer as she was aspiring to become a psychologist.

The final word. Ranbir Kapoor: "One would think rom-coms are easy, but they are even harder, especially this one because Luv has a certain tone in which he writes his films. There’s a specific way you look at your co-actors, the way you sing or cry. So, one has to renew the genre. For both Shraddha and me, it was a challenge." New Indian Express
