170. Das Ka Dhamki; movie review

DAS KA DHAMKI
Cert 15
140 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong violence, bloody images, language

Crikey, Das Ka Dhamki is a very strange film.
For its first half, it appears to be a knockabout comedy about a penniless waiter who falls in love with a girl who has expensive tastes.
And then it morphs into a crazed doppelganger drama in which menace and violence are to the fore.
This is Vishwaksen's movie - he wrote, produced and directed it and plays the two leading roles.
Presumably, that meant he had total control and nobody around to tell him when things were going a tad crazy.
The opening stages are set at a five-star hotel where Krishna Das (Vishwaksen) dreams of the high life as he is degraded by customers.
Thus, for one night only, he and his pals (Hyper Aadi and Mahesh Achanta) pretend they are rich.
This impresses a girl (Nivetha Pethuraj) on whom he spends money he hasn't got to lure her into a relationship.
Inevitably, slapstick scenes follow as he tries desperately to avoid being found out.
And then the film switches at indecent speed to a full-on gangster movie with Krishna Vas caught up as lookalike to a psychopathic killer.
So, the fairly straightforward amiable comedy turns into a violent mess of a film and culminates, during the closing credits, in absolute madness.
It is as if Vishwaksen has had a wacky dream, woke up, wrote  it all down and transferred it to the big screen.
Its denouements are ridiculous and frankly the film is not worth wasting another word other than an appeal not to make the sequel which was set up at the end.

Reasons to watch: Comedic first half

Did you know? Vishwak Sen changed his name from Dinesh Naidu after his father checked its numerology chart and said that name would never bring him success, regardless of hard work. He suggested four alternative names and the actor chose Vishwak Sen.

The final word. Vishwak Sen: "Das Ka Dhamki has fared beyond our expectations. This is my career-best opener, grossing nearly Rs 9 crore on day one. I hope it gets bigger and better by the day." OTT Play
