First challenger for the Oscars? Teyana Taylor would certainly be a worthy nomination.
She is spellbinding as Inez, a young mum who battles against the odds to bring up her young son in New York.
Meanwhile, there should be high praise for director A.V. Rockwell for her stirring debut.
A Thousand And One has multiple strands, constantly prompting its audience to change their minds in the judgment of its characters.
Initially, Inez seems self-centred, putting herself before nurturing her child but the more layered the film becomes, the more empathy she gleans.
The movie is so realistic that our hearts were bleeding for little Terry (Aaron Kingsley Adetola) as he is snatched by Inex after being in foster care.
She runs away from Brooklyn to Harlem and hides him as she earns money as a cleaner in a care home.
The film runs for 12 years from the mid-90s and sees the pair's relationship through very difficult early days to a step-father (Will Catlett) coming onto the scene with Aven Courtney and Josiah Cross picking up the role of Terry seamlessly.
The movie also examines the gentrification of New York under Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg.
Interestingly, this has a deeper effect than the tragedy of The Twin Towers which goes unmentioned.
It all adds up to a picture which is so well executed that the viewer will be lulled into thinking they are watching a documentary.
And they will find themselves rankling over the actions of Inez long after the movie has ended.

The final word. Teyana Taylor: "I've met her before and I've seen her before. I've met her through my mom, I've met her through my aunts. I've met her through a lot of the other women in my life. Including just seeing some of her in myself. And it was something that I felt like I wanted to be a part of and that was so beautiful. I almost feel like this s--- was written for me." EW.com
