227. Annhi Dea Mazaak Ae; movie review

ANNHI DEA MAZAAK AE
Cert 12A

BBFC advice: Contains moderate bad language, threat, violence

Annhi dea Mazaak Ae is two and a half hours of a soppy love story combined with dozens of bad-taste jokes about blindness.
Its premise is too crass to be funny and, even though its denouement adds a dash of charm, it is far too late to pull it around.
The movie begins with Ammy Virk's character Raja falling in love at first sight with a guest (Pari Pandher) at a high-class wedding at which he is working.
Despite not even talking to her, he becomes besotted and his obsession reaches an even higher level after he goes to England and is struck blind following an accident.
He is told that he needs to undergo an urgent operation if his sight is to be saved but does not have the money to fund it.
Meanwhile, he makes friends with another sightless chap (Nasir Chinyoti) and a girl who takes him under her proverbial wing.
Inevitably, he finds himself in scrapes with the former and falling in love with the latter.
Rakesh Dhawan's film lacks subtlety. Every joke is hammered home and there is no nuance to Raja's predicament.
The farce becomes even more dumbfounding when Raja is introduced to the girl's family and tries to make out that he isn't blind.
There are so many lame gags and the characters are so one-dimensional they are, frankly, dull.
The fact that it went on for so long was akin to torture.

Did you know? Ammy Virk started his career as a singer with the song Yaar Amli featuring Amrinder Gill in 2013. In 2014, he released another single 'Jatt di Akal'. Subsequently, he made his acting debut with Nikka Zaildar in 2016.

The final word.  Rakesh Dhawan: "People prefer me to write comedy like 'Honsla Rakh' but for my directorial debut, I chose a sensitive subject like in Aaja Mexico Challiye and those with social messages. But the audiences seem to  prefer me in the comic genre, hence after a gap of over a year, I am back with a comedy film." Times Of India
