273. Elemental; movie review

Here is another children's movie with a heavy message about kindness to people different from us.

Peter Sohn's Elemental is an animated love story that cleverly addresses the issue of immigration.

Its characters are earth elements such as fire, water and air alongside trees and plants.

Each has a separate neighbourhood and is encouraged by their elders not to mix with those from others.

The central 'fire family' are immigrants who initially struggled to settle, but now mum, dad and their daughter are pillars of their community.

Leah Lewis lends her voice to teenager Ember (geddit?), whose fierce temper is hindering her from taking over the shop that her dad (Ronnie Del Carmen) has run for years.

Meanwhile, the premises face being shut down by Wade - a bungling water inspector (Mamoudou Athie) who arrives after a critical leak.

Opposites attract and although fire should avoid water, Ember cannot resist Wade's charm.

But first, they must join forces to prevent leaks threatening her dad's shop.

Elemental has many elements we have come to love from Pixar - spiky yet warm characters with colourful and imaginative backgrounds.

The team has also worked hard on its humour - with lots of fire and water puns around Element City.

And it features Lauv's romantic song, "Steal The Show", with its addictive hook.

But at its heart is the idea that love will find a way and, even though we all knew what is coming, we are still rooting for Wade and Ember.

It might be a bit earnest but elemental's clever writing and fasty pace make it worth watching.

Did you know? Filmmakers paid homage to the late Ralph Eggleston, a veteran art director, character designer and production designer who joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1992. The sign created in his honour, Eat at Ralph’s Café, can be seen in the heart of Element City.

The final word. Peter Sohn: "There was nothing like this here at Pixar before. We're just doing toys and cars and humans. There was no roadmap, so you had to start with a clean slate. It started from drawings and then getting a technical team to do crazy experiments." Screen Rant
