13. Bad Behaviour; movie review

BAD BEHAVIOUR
Cert 15
107 mins
BBFC advice: Contains very strong language, brief strong violence, suicide references

Bad Behaviour may be a niche movie, but Jennifer Connelly's searing performance makes it worth seeking out.
Connelly plays Lucy, a former child star who has enrolled in a retreat for those trying to find themselves.
It turns out that she has a shed-load of mental baggage, and unfocused anger is weighing her down.
She hopes the retreat and its spiritual leader (Ben Whishaw) will give her direction, but instead, it only makes her even more explosive.
Meanwhile, her daughter (Alice Englert), a movie stuntwoman, is on location in New Zealand and is having trouble finding herself.
Englert is also the director of Bad Behaviour, a film that delves profoundly but unconventionally into a mother-daughter relationship.
On the face of it, the two see little of each other and appear to be self-consumed, but the longer the picture progresses, the more apparent the impact of their estrangement becomes.
Unfortunately, it takes too long to find out why.
Before that happens, there are highly dramatic incidents in their respective retreat and movie sets.
Bad Behaviour is akin to a theatre piece because it has a small cast, and the dialogue is unusual and exaggerated.
Indeed, Connolly's Lucy moves from being quiet and frustrated to loud and angry.
The movie has a snipe at therapists but doesn't offer easy answers to mental illness or complicated parent/child relationships.
It will not be for everyone because of the complexity of its characters, but, on balance, it was worth watching.

Did you know? Alice debuted at the age of eight in a film called Listen. She also appeared at the age of 12 in the short film The Water Diary by her mother, Jane Campion.

The final word. Alice Englert: "I think I just want more films that don't care if the women look good, and I think there are so many people making those films now – and who have been writing and making those stories all along. Now they're just exploding in a way that I love." Russh
