How would Jesus have killed an animal?
Mainstream religious leaders, especially in the United States, state unequivocally that there is no sin in eating the beasts that God has provided us.
However, Kip Andersen's documentary Christspiracy finds theologians who dispute teachings that date back 2,000 years.
Andersen, who has created previous movies about animal exploitation, was inspired to explore the historical connection between religion and meat eating by former Christian singer Kameron Waters.
The latter turned his back on the church because he could not square the circle of a peace-loving doctrine advocating animal slaughter.
Many television evangelists support the claim that animals have been put on the earth by God to sustain humans.
Other religions have rituals around meat but only some Indian religions support total vegetarianism.
The filmmakers believe in Christ and set out to uncover evidence that he would either eat meat or refuse to.
They speak to experts in theology who give fascinating academic insights, and they delve into the link between the modern-day church and the huge corporations involved in the meat industry.
Christspiracy also explores the connection between meat, festivals, and special days such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Simply asking pointed questions becomes dangerous because the stakeholders in billion-dollar businesses do not want their investments threatened.
This may all sound a trifle dull, but trust me, the deeper the filmmakers dig, the more shocking the revelations.
