Properly weird and yet enthralling, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer is another episode in the very strange world of Yorgos Lanthimos.
It will not make my top 20 of 2017 but it will still linger long in the memory.
Two years ago, after watching The Lobster, I wrote: "It is far from straightforward. In fact, I would imagine many people would find it impenetrable.
"Not so long ago I would have agreed but it would appear I have grown an artistic antenna without noticing and was, therefore, engrossed."
Ditto, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer.
Colin Farrell appeared in the Lobster and returns here as a surgeon who has a curious relationship with a teenage boy (Barry Keoghan)
It transpires that the latter is the son of a man who died on the operating table several years previously and it becomes clear he is seeking revenge.
However, I was initially distracted from central element of the plot by the monotone monologue which makes it appear that every action is so matter of fact.
This becomes ever odder amid drama, trauma or even kinky sex (between Farrell and his screen wife, Nicole Kidman).
Indeed, there is no doubt that The Killing Of A Sacred Deer needs perseverance, especially for those unused to Lanthimos's work.
And many may have the same loathing as I did towards Dogtooth - my first experience of him.
Even I initially thought that Farrell's flat delivery was too reminiscent of Ardal O'Hanlon's Father Dougal in Father Ted.
But, after a while, I began to realise just how good the acting needs to be to maintain this deadpan style.
This applies to all of the key players, with young Raffey Cassidy and Sunny Suljic, admirably complementing their elders.
But, most of all, Lanthimos hooked me to the plot in way that his previous movies did not.
I was rapt, right up to a totally unexpected finale.

Reasons to watch: weird but strangely compelling
Reasons to avoid: the really odd staccato dialogue

Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: regurgitation
Nudity: yes
Overall rating: 8.5/10

Star tweet
I am disgusted, alarmed, terrified, heartbroken, disturbed, confused, startled, troubled, dazed, appalled, provoked all at the same time but I'm mostly satisfied after watching the brilliant "The Killing of a Sacred Deer". What a masterpiece
