Its trailer promised high-level excitement but I am afraid The Mountain Between Us had nothing more to give than its two-minute précis.
Try as they might, Kate Winslet and Idrissa Elba just cannot make this icy drama grip in the way that the likes of Alive or even Cliffhanger did.
Winslet plays a bride-to-be who joins forces with a medic (Elba) in trying to find a small plane to take them to their wedding and emergency surgery respectively.
It is immediately obvious that this was a poor idea because much bigger aircraft had been grounded due to an impending storm.
Nevertheless, they put their lives in his hands and pretty soon regret doing so.
Thus, when the plane crashes, nobody is searching for them because nobody knows they took the flight in the first place (I forgot to mention that neither informed their nearest and dearest of their crackpot plan).
But the daftness has only just begun as they try to save themselves from being stranded atop on ice-bound mountain.
To be fair, Elba and Winslet develop a decent chemistry as they try to make the treacherous descent and the dog has the 'ahh' factor.
But some of the plotlines are just too incredible to believe and, therefore, serve to lessen the dramatic effect.
Indeed, I regretted watching the trailer (it is not always possible to avoid them) because it includes the two best scenes.
Those apart, Handy Abu-Assad’s film disappointingly tepid.
Reasons to watch: the chemistry of Winslet and Elba
Reasons to avoid: does not grip as much as it should
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 5.5/10
If you're a fan of movies that explore the unquantifiable sense of survival & self preservation of the human spirit & the ability of humans to forge relationships in extreme circumstances, then I would recommend putting The Mountain Between Us on your watch list.
