181. You Me And Him; movie review

A mainstream comedy with two gay women at its heart. It's not unheard of but laudable. A next-door neighbour who has the hots for one of them offers enough potential spice to be a winner.
And then there is the question of motherhood being the cement in their life partnership.
To top it off Daisy Aitken's You Me And Him stars such well-known British actors as Lucy Punch, Faye Marsay and David Tennant with cameos by Don Warrington, Peter Davidson, Gemma Jones, David Warner, Sally Phillips and Simon Bird.
There are enough elements to make this movie work. However, I am afraid it does not.
The simple fact is that You Me And Him doesn't elicit enough laughs. And, about halfway through, its makers give up trying to prompt any and it becomes something of a social drama.
Indeed, tears are more likely than giggles.
Punch is the focus of most of the film but doesn't really live up to her name. I never found her convincing in her relationship with Marsay or in her loathing of her alpha-male neighbour (Tennant).
Ditto Tennant. He is out of place starting up a male self-help group and grunting about football.
Marsay does her best to breathe life into the film but her character is too much at odds with herself to be truly appealing.
In the final analysis, I have to say that I watched You Me And Him last week and I will have forgotten it by next week.
I cannot think of a more suitable word to describe it than 'meh!', accompanied by shrugged shoulders.
