336. Ant-man And the Wasp; movie review
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP
Cert 12A

BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence
Hold on a minute.... the woman sitting next to me was laughing out loud. It surely couldn't be Mrs W because she doesn't like Marvel films.
I couldn't remember how much I enjoyed the original Ant-man but just read a review in which I gave it 9/10 and wrote: "I smiled broadly at the end of the credits when it stated that Ant-man will be back. I can't wait."
Whaaat? Yes, it is there in black and what that I was hoping for a sequel despite not being a fan of superhero movies or the plethora of franchise films.
And yet, as was seen from Mrs W's reaction (and mine!), Ant-Man and The Wasp is another winner.
Paul Rudd, thankfully back to form again after the lame Ideal Home, plays Scott Lang, alias Ant-Man, who is nearing the end of two years under house arrest.
But, just when he is trying to occupy himself for the final few days, he is kidnapped by a former love (Evageline Lilly) a scientist who believes that he can help find her mum (Michelle Pfeiffer) in the quantum realm.
Hold on, you might say, that quantum realm stuff sounds a bit like physics GCSE (or O' level fir us older folk).
Fortunately, you don't need to worry your heads. The egg-head stuff is very much a sideline to the fluctuations of big to small and back again and the dramatic and often hilarious scenarios that brings.
Others among the A-list cast include Michael Douglas (unusually as a good guy) as the genius who invented reduction to micro-size and Laurence Fishburne as his old friend turned rival in discovery.
Walton Goggins is among those trying to deflect the heroes from their course, while attempting to steal the technology for sale.
Meanwhile, Hannah John-Kamen plays Ghost who needs the elaborate quantum realm machine for her own needs.
But it really is Ant-man's humour and that of his business partner (Michael Peña) and his sidekicks which enliven Peyton Reed's movie. Meanwhile, Randall Park, is super as an exasperated detective who tries to be on Ant-man's trail.
Ant-man doesn't have the crash-bang-wallop of the Avengers' movies nor the crudeness of Deadpool. In my view, it's nearest comparison is The Incredibles. I lapped that up that sequel as I did this.
Reasons to watch: Marvel becomes fun
Reasons to avoid: It is yet another superhero sequel
Laughs: Five
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 8.5/10
Director quote - Peyton Reed: "The commonality really is Paul and myself having an idea of what we want to do tonally in terms of the intimacy of the movie. Also, really making sure that, from the beginning, I worked really closely with Evangeline Lilly about the character of Hope and how we were going to make her different and how we were going to evolve that character in this movie."
The big question - What does that ending mean?
