286. Student Of The Year 2; movie review

STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2
Cert 12A
145 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence, infrequent strong language

"An Indian Hindi-language "teen" film", states the synopsis of Student Of The Year 2 on Wikipedia.
So, why are there no teenagers among the cast? Its protagonists - Tiger Shroff and Aditya Seal are 29 and 31 respectively.
Why do Indian movies consistently include stars who are far older than the characters they portray?
Honestly, seeing people of this age dressed in school uniform looks plain weird.
Anyway, once I had got over the age hurdle I tried hard to immerse myself in the homage to the Tiger.
Yes, his character, Rohan, is a man who can do anything - from superfast running to the Indian version of tig (Kabbadi) as well as having an enigmatic smile to match his dashing good looks.
Student Of The Year 2 has plenty of beautiful people among its cast including Rohan's rival (Seal), his girlfriend (Tara Sutaria) and his rival's sister (Ananya Pandey).
They are all in Tiger's shadow as he dances, fights plays myriad sports and flashes his gnashers.
Punit Malhotra's film sees Rohan win a scholarship to a new college, following his childhood sweetheart (Sutaria).
Unfortunately, the upmarket college is home to the spiteful and even his girl doesn't seem too pleased to see him.
Therefore, he tries way too hard to impress and alienates pretty much everyone in the process, including his pals from his old school.
The movie's meat surrounds how he tries to put things right.
On the plus side, the choreography of the dance numbers is impressive, the action scenes turn heads and the songs are catchy but the problem is that the storyline is overflowing with cliches and is desperately predictable.
I long Bollywood movie-makers to reach for anything but the obvious but as long as the audiences keep turning up for work as unambitious as this, they will keep churning it out.

Reasons to watch: Tiger Shroff fans will be in awe
Reasons to avoid: Very predictable

Laugh: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 5.5/10

Did you know? Will Smith who always wanted to be a part of Bollywood dance sequence, ensured his wish fulfilled by shaking a leg with 'Student of the Year 2' actors Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria in the film.

The final word. "I think sports should be part of everyone’s lives. Every college should be a holistic experience and make some sport compulsory. So must schools. In this tech-savvy world, every student must get out once in a while for some outdoor activity, and get their dose of Vitamin D!" India West
